Landmarks of Dekalb County, Alabama

World War II Veterans Book

WWII Veterans from DeKalb County, by Julia BrownThis project grew from approximately 100 histories collected by former mayor Fred Purdy, who turned them over to Landmarks for preservation, to over 500 histories.

Landmarks devised a biographical form which was sent to each of those, asking for further information. We continued adding to the number of histories by placing this form in public places, speaking to civic organizations, and publishing articles in the local newspapers describing the project and asking for histories to be included in the book. By the cutoff date we had approximately 500 histories.

The book includes photos of most of the veterans, along with descriptions of medals, ribbons and badges, military insignia, historical photos and a section on what is was like on the home front during the war. The book is 8.75 inches by 11.25 inches and 720 pages in length.

The military history of those of the “greatest generation ” is fast being lost, and we would appreciate your response and participation in this archival project. Veterans who did not get in this book can still participate by filling out and submitting the form below.
